Apple working on iPhone 9 Plus, reveals iOS 14 code

Lots of rumors and specifications about the purported iPhone 9 leaked on the Internet for the past couple of weeks

As per the latest report, the Cupertino giant is working on a larger ‘Plus’ variant as well. The details about the iPhone 9 Plus has been snapped from iOS 14 code snippets.

According to the leaked information, the iPhone 9 and 9 Plus will be the successor to the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus. Both the smartphones are expected to be powered by A13 Bionic chip, the same processor used in the iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro. This makes the iPhone 9 series a perfect option for those who are waiting for a cheaper upgrade.

Furthermore, the report revealed that both iPhone 9 and 9 Plus would feature the trademark home button with an integrated Taptic Engine to simulate clicks and reduce hardware failures. Since it is rumored to be an entry-level iPhone, the upcoming iPhone 9 series will have Touch ID instead of Face ID.

Other expected features are Apple Pay and the Express Transit feature, the ability to scan the NFC tag. It’s worth mentioning that the iPhone 9 series names are just speculation just like iPhone SE 2. This device will be released this spring alongside fourth-generation iPad Pro.

Mobile Phones to cost more from April 2020 due to GST Hike from 12% to 18%

The GST Council in its 39th meeting has increased GST rates for several products including mobile phones.

The council has increased GST rate on Mobile Phones and specified parts from 12% to 18%, which will increase the rate of mobile phones in the country. This move is to correct the inverted duty structure, said the GST Council.

Regarding this move, Xiaomi India Head, Manu Kumar Jain said that the GST increase for phones will crumble the industry. He added that the smartphone industry is already struggling with profitability due to depreciating INR vs US$ & supply chain disruption due to Covid-19 and said that that everyone will be forced to increase prices, which will further weaken mobile industry’s Make In India program. He has requested the Prime Minister and the Finance minster to at least exempt mobiles under $200 (=₹15,000) from this.

Pankaj Mohindroo, Chairman, Indian Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA), said:

The GST raise will place an additional burden of Rs 15,000 crore on the common man and adversely impact over 100 crore Indian consumers. When coronavirus is spreading panic, the economic slowdown is at its peak, consumer sentiment is battered and stock markets are in free-fall, increasing GST is both counter-intuitive and insensitive. This will lead to immediate job losses and severely dampen future investments in manufacturing.

The GST hike is contrary to the Prime Minister’s vision to make India the world leader in mobile phone manufacturing. Further, reaching $80 billion (Rs 6 lakh crore) domestic production of mobile phones, as per the National Policy on Electronics 2019, will be impossible to achieve.

Redmi Note 9S with quad rear cameras, punch-hole display to be announced on March 23

After the launch of Redmi Note 9 Pro and Note 9 Pro Max smartphones in India last week, Xiaomi is gearing up to launch the Redmi Note 9S smartphone in Singapore on March 23rd.

After the launch of the Redmi Note 9 Pro and the Redmi Note 9 Pro Max, Xiaomi’s sub-brand Redmi has now announced the launch of the Redmi Note 9S on its Singapore Twitter handle and Malaysia Facebook page. The Redmi Note 9S, said to be the smaller version of the Note 9 Pro phones launched on March 12, is slated for a launch on March 23, the company announced on social media.

The teaser images confirm quad rear camera set up, similar to the Note 9 Pro and a punch-hole display, which the company calls “DotDisplay”.

The phone is said to come with model number M2003J6A1G and code-name  “Merlin”. The Note 9 Pro series is powered by Snapdragon 720G, but it is not clear if the Note 9 will use Snapdragon or MediaTek SoC. Since this will be a smaller version of the phone, the Redmi Note 9S could also be powered by a MediaTek chipset.

Redmi Note 7 Pro battery explodes in Gurgaon, service centre tries to blame customer

Redmi Note 8 Pro 6GB + 128 GB for Rs 14,999
Plus additional 10% instant discount on Citi Cards

The service centre tried blaming the customer, saying he had physically damaged the Redmi Note 7 Pro unit that led to the blast

A Gurgaon man has been left shaken as his Redmi Note 7 Pro unit exploded spontaneously within seconds of heating up in his pocket. In a post, Gurgaon-based Vikesh Kumar said his unit exploded after a battery blast, which also set his bag ablaze and completely incinerated it. The smartphone had been purchased in December 2019 and was always charged using the bundled charger. Kumar says he did not suffer any physical harm but adds that he was grossly disappointed with the response from the Xiaomi service centre, which first tried to blame him for the blast and then attempted to extract money out of him for a replacement unit. The incident happened yesterday, and the Xiaomi customer put his ordeal on social media today after receiving the poor response from the service centre.

The Redmi which also got burnt due to Note 7 Pro Phone Blast

Speaking exclusively to one of the prominent Tech sites, Kumar said the Redmi Note 7 Pro unit was at 90 percent charge when he reached his workplace earlier today. He soon felt the smartphone’s temperature rise up steadily and took the phone out of his pocket seconds later. Upon taking the phone out of his pocket, he saw the smoke emitting from the battery and threw it towards his bag that was lying nearby.

Disheartened with his new smartphone going up in flames, Kumar went to a city-based Xiaomi service centre. However, the executives tasked with helping Xiaomi customers instead tried to blame him for the blast, telling him that he was the one responsible for the blast by causing damage to the smartphone that led to the battery blast. They even measured the hole left in the bag due to the fire and the phone to make sure the fire was indeed caused by the blast.

That’s when the Redmi Note 7 Pro unit exploded and set the bag on fire, completely destroying it within minutes. In fact, the fire grew so big that it could not be put out without using a fire extinguisher – Kumar says he could have suffered physical damage had he delayed taking the phone out of his pocket by even 5 seconds.

Redmi Note 7 Pro in mutilated condition after blast

When Kumar refused to take the blame, the service centre tried to get him to pay 50 percent of the smartphone’s cost to get a new Redmi Note 7 Pro unit as a replacement. In the job sheet provided, the service centre doesn’t even mention the blast as the issue, listing ‘Power On Fault’ as the fault instead.

Mobile phone brands have long used the tactic of blaming the customer for using third-party chargers, prior damage, or third-party service centres for blasts. But since that was not the case this time around, it seems the customer itself is being blamed now. Xiaomi was reached out on the matter and will update the story when we get further response and an update on it.

We have seen smartphones and feature phones exploding many times in the past, including many from Xiaomi. In a recent incident, from February this year, a Redmi Note 6 Pro unit started emitting smoke and caught on fire when unauthorized service personnel was attempting to repair it. Jio Phones, Samsung Galaxy S10 5G, iPhone XS Max, Redmi Note 4, Mi A1, and Moto E3 Power are some of the phones that have been in the news for explosions over the last few years.

In 2019, Redmi Note 8 Pro became India’s No. 1 Quad Camera smartphone and Redmi Note 8 went on to become the No. 1 Android smartphone globally.

We are especially excited about Redmi Note 9 Pro Max as we push the boundaries of innovation across Mobiles and software in its segment. We are especially proud of our deep partnership with ISRO which allows us to bring India’s first navigation system, NavIC, to our Mi fans and consumers. Redmi Note 9 Pro series is built for true Mi Fans and we hope they would appreciate this perfect amalgamation of Aura design, Pro Cameras and Max Performance as we continue to bring the best specs with highest quality at honest pricing.
