Audi has had a great run in India with their SUVs – the Q3, Q5 & Q7 in particular – and it’s now bringing in an all-new sporty flagship. But is the Q8 worthy?
STYLING IT RIGHT
The Coupé-SUV segment has really picked up the pace over the past decade. For one, SUVs are incredibly popular today, both in India and worldwide. And two, more-and-more brands are now pushing the boundaries and experimenting with the idea of an SUV to expand their products in the SUV segment.
The Q8 is a product of a more aggressive school of thought – one where the design dictates the product. It’s no surprise then that Audi’s designers have given the car a massive grille, which instantly demands your attention, and a sloping roofline, which renders the Q8 with a sporty touch.
The highlights of the Q8’s design, though, are the flared wheel arches that hark back to that of the Audi Quattro, reminding you of its lineage, and the large taillight, which gives the Q8 a distinct identity. Also, the frameless doors of the Q8 are a nice touch and work to the same effect.
The interior is also very distinctive, with its three different digital display screens. The instrument cluster is, of course, dominated by Audi’s Virtual Cockpit – which is a delight to use – but the rest of the infotainment system and controls are also accessed via touchscreens.

Finding a niche in the automotive market is not easy, but the good folks at Audi seem to excel at it. From the RS6 to the RS7, Audi seems to have created a successful system of finding niches with some fantastic cars. With the new Q8 that you see on these pages, Audi hopes to create the same magic in the Coupé-SUV segment.

Now, I’m no fan of touchscreen controls – I think that they make the driver take their eyes off the road, something I think is not a great idea. So, my natural aversion to touchscreen controls remains. Sure, with their haptic feedback, these touchscreens are easy to use and are quite responsive too. But, to be honest, I still prefer good old-fashioned buttons.
KITTED OUT
Of course, like any other modern Audi, the Q8 comes fully equipped, although the exact specifications for the India model are still being decided. The Bang & Olufsen audio system of our test car ensured that we had a lot of fun on the road. Pair that with the fantastic overall quality of the car, and the Q8 is, without a doubt, a delightful place to spend time in.
Certain aspects of the Q8 deserve specific applause, such as the fantastic LED Matrix headlights, which are not only super bright but also fantastic in their operation. I truly hope that this feature is retained in the India-spec model.
The refinement of the drivetrain is also superb. Its 3.0-litre TFSI engine generates 335bhp, which means that it’s more than quick enough for everyday use. Paired with the standard all-wheel-drive system, the drivetrain allows you to effortlessly gain momentum – the 0 – 100km/h sprint is achieved in under 6 seconds.
Our test ride, on Dubai’s flawless roads, was very comfortable. However, we still need to test this aspect in Indian conditions once the car reaches our shores in the middle of January.
EXPLORING A NICHE
To be honest, the Coupé-SUV segment is quite a niche in the Indian market. And the Q8, as Audi’s flagship SUV, is aiming to reset the benchmarks of the segment. With its great quality, fantastic ride and refinement, the Q8 seems to be well equipped to challenge the best in the segment.
Of course, a diesel version of the Q8 would’ve made things more interesting – something that Audi India is currently reluctant to offer. But, still, the fact that the ultra-hot and uber fast RS Q8 is confirmed for India in 2020 should be enough to spice things up in the segment and give its cousin, the Lamborghini Urus, some sleepless nights.
After a couple of years of disappointing sales, in 2020, Audi India will certainly claw back some lost ground with a line-up of brand-new vehicles, including the A6, Q8, RS Q8 and, the much anticipated, Q3. What this means is that Indian customers have a lot to look forward to, in terms of new Audi products thanks to a renewed range. And the Q8 seems to be a perfect vehicle to begin Audi India’s journey to reclaim its once revered market-leading status.
Pros:
Distinctive design
Excellent quality
Cons:
No diesel engines
X-Factor: If you’re looking to stand out in the crowd, the Audi Q8 is your vehicle of choice!

At this price, the Bajaj Chetak electric scooter is a direct rival to the Ather 450 in India
The new Chetak has been launched at Rs 1 lakh (ex-showroom Pune and Bengaluru). The Indian brand’s first all-electric scooter is one of the most anticipated launches of 2020 and its bookings open tomorrow. The e-scooter is available in two variants – the base-spec Urbane and the Premium, which costs Rs 1.15 lakh.
The Premium model gets additional metallic colour options, a dark/light tan seat, metallic-coloured wheels and a disc brake at the front. The Urbane model, meanwhile, misses out on the metallic colour option and uses a drum brake at the front.
The new Chetak is powered by a 3.8kW/4.1kW (continuous/peak power) electric motor, which sends power to the rear wheel via a unique automated transmission. The company has said that its Intuitive Kick Down Mode will supply an additional surge of power when required. This motor derives power from a lithium-ion battery pack that claims to deliver a real-world range of 95km in Eco Mode and 85km in Sport mode.
For reference, the Ather 450 has a 3.3kW/5.4kW (continuous/peak power) motor with an 80kph claimed top speed. The bike maker claims a range of 55-75km, depending on the riding mode. Torque on the Ather stands at 20.5Nm as compared to the 16Nm produced by the new Chetak.
Bajaj is also offering a warranty of three years/50,000kms on the IP67-rated battery. The charge time on the Chetak is a claimed 5hr for 100 percent and 1hr for 25 percent. Charging will be provided with the scooter and the installation will be carried out by a trained technician at the customer’s house.
Bajaj has equipped the Chetak e-scooter with features like ‘feather touch’ switchgear, full-LED lighting and digital console. In addition, the company has used high-quality materials on the mirror stalks, side stand and pillion foot pegs, further underlining its premium positioning. The Chetak will also come with a one year free subscription of internet data that will allow users to access the scooter’s charge status, location and remaining range via the mobile phone application, even when you’re not with your bike.
The closest rivals to the Chetak will be Ather’s 450 and 450X – as the former is currently priced at Rs 1.14 lakh (on-road, Bengaluru).

Thanks to a handful of pictures that leaked over the weekend, we now have a better idea of what to expect from Samsung’s next flagship phone.
A couple of weeks ago, a rumor surfaced stating that Samsung wouldn’t call its next flagship smartphone the Galaxy S11, was expected. Instead, Samsung would go with “Galaxy S20” for the name. Last year’s Galaxy S release was called the Galaxy S10.
Samsung is holding its next Unpacked keynote on Feb. 11 in San Francisco, Cali., where we expect the company will announce the S20 lineup, and possibly a clamshell foldable phone.
Ahead of the announcement, a trio of pictures appeared on Twitter over the weekend, and they seemingly confirm not only the new name, but the four-camera setup on the back, and a slightly changed overall design for the S20-series.
The images come courtesy of Max Weinbach, a writer XDA Developers, who received the photos from a source.
Let’s start with the back of the phone. In addition to the very prominent sticker reminding whoever has access to the device that it’s “CONFIDENTIAL” and very clearly states that no photos are allowed, the rear camera array lines up with previous leaks. There are four cameras in a rectangular box. Last year’s S10+ had three cameras — a wide, ultra-wide and telephoto lens. It’s unclear what the fourth lens will do on the S20+.
The name is seemingly confirmed by a photo of the phone turning on, which is when Samsung phones display their name and model number. Specifically, the photos are of a Galaxy S20+ 5G.
As you can see in the photos, and later mentioned by Weinbach on Twitter, the S20+ doesn’t use a curved edge display as Samsung has used for the past few years. Instead, it has a flatter 2.5D glass design.
I’ve reached out to Samsung for a comment on the photos and will update this post if I hear back.
In the meantime, you can check out everything else we know about the Galaxy S11, excuse me, S20 before it launches next month. What do you think about the S20’s new name and look?
Customers at a French retail store were left furious after a seemingly a generous deal on televisions turned out to be a huge blunder.
Géant Casino in the southern city of Montpellier, accidentally priced the TVs at €30.99 (Rs 2,450) while it was actually €399 (Rs 31,500).
The initial deal spread on social media like wildfire, and a swarm of people showed up at the store to grab the cheap TV, until they found out the truth.
“We are located right across from the Géant Casino checkout lines. I saw a lot of police and a crowd of people,” Fox News quoted Jean-Christophe, who works inside the shopping mall as saying,
He added that some people had four or five televisions in their shopping trolley.
When the staff denied selling the television sets at the advertised price, customers became angry and refused to leave the store until they were allowed to make the purchase on the bargain price.
